RV Mattress Size Buying Guide

Did you know that about nine percent of households in America are RV owners? Did you also know that more than 20 million more families have aspirations of owning an RV at some point in their lifetime? Are you one of them?

If you have an RV already, or you plan to buy one in the near future, you may be on the hunt for a good quality RV mattress or plush bed. But it’s important to do your research on the right size, first off, as there are many different sizes to choose from.

RV Mattress Twin

Standard Size: 38" X 75"

The RV twin mattress is a popular one because it saves a lot of space inside the vehicle. It also serves many different purposes. Aside from using it as a bed, you could also use it as a couch or chair.

RV twin beds typically don’t surpass 40" x 80". You’ll mostly find these in small campers or in RVs with bunk beds. However, this probably isn’t the best choice for you if you’re tall, as these mattresses are a bit shorter than standard mattresses. But for children and short adults, they’re ideal.

RV Full Mattress

Standard Size: 54" x 75"

This size mattress can easily accommodate two sleepers, measuring almost the same as a traditional full size bed. But you may not want this size if you have a small RV. Keep in mind, full RV mattresses are also referred to as double mattresses.

RV Mattress Queen Short

Standard Size: 60" x 75"

Also referred to as “RV short queen” or “RV short queen mattress”, this type does differ from your home’s standard queen mattress. RV queen mattresses can fit two adults comfortably. They are popular because they work best with shorter beds. But even though they are shorter than the RV queen bed (75” vs. 80”), there isn’t a big difference between the RV queen mattress and the RV queen short.

RV Mattress Queen

Standard Size: 60" x 80"

This is one of the more common mattress sizes, measuring about the same as your home’s standard queen mattress at home. You can fit two sleepers on this mattress.

RV Mattress King

Standard Size: 72" x 80"

The most common size is 72” by 80”, but keep in mind they are more narrow than regular king-size mattresses.

RV Bunk Mattresses

This is best for kids, available in various sizes:

  • 28'' x 75''
  • 30'' x 75''
  • 30'' x 80''
  • 34'' x 75''
  • 35'' x 79''

Custom RV Mattresses

Sometimes you need to order a customized mattress to fit the unique spaces in your RV. Many people choose custom mattress after remodeling the layout of their RV.

RV Mattress Materials

RV mattresses are manufactured using different materials, just like regular beds. Here’s a look at the many materials that can be used:

Latex

This is a popular choice because it’s eco-friendly and biodegradable. These mattresses are also very durable, hypoallergenic, and breathable, which reduces nighttime sweating.

Memory Foam

These give you good pressure relief, as they contour to your body. If you have a lot of pain and discomfort when you sleep, try a memory foam RV mattress.

Gel Memory Foam

A Gel Memory Foam RV Mattress creates a soft, cooling top layer. A high-density core of PlushFoam supports and eases pressure while releasing heat.

Air Mattress

These are lighter and do not require need cushioning for support. They are pumped with air instead. They are usually the cheapest option in terms of price and comfort. Air mattresses can be damaged more easily and lose air gradually throughout the night. They’re not good for long-term use, often resulting in back pain and stiffness.

Innerspring Mattress

These are cheaper than latex or memory foam mattresses but become very uncomfortable within a few short years because the coils and springs start to pop through. You could add a natural latex topper to it, though, to increase its lifespan.

Hybrid

This type blends traditional spring coils with memory foam, giving you the best of both worlds.

RV Mattress Use and Care Instructions

An RV mattress needs the same TLC that your home mattress does – sometimes even more because RVs are prone to a lot of internal damage. This can happen due to weather, pests, moisture and more. Check out these tips for taking care of your RV mattress.

Keep it Covered

A cover protects the quality of your mattress over time. Best part is, they are washable and can guard against spills and leaks. They are also noiseless and comfortable.

Rotate the Mattress

This will balance the weight evenly over time. It’s recommended that you flip your mattress once a month.

Control Moisture Levels

Moisture can do a lot of harm to your interiors, especially your mattress. Run a dehumidifier to draw excess moisture out of the air. Also, make sure the RV is well ventilated, keeping the humidity level between 30 and 50 percent so mold does not grow.

Air Out the Mattress

Place the mattress outside on warm days to air dry it out. This will eliminate microorganisms, dust mites and bed bugs that won’t survive high temperatures. This will also help to reduce allergies.

Use a Mattress Topper

This will boost your comfort level and will also add to the durability of your mattress by protecting the mattress surface.

Clean It Regularly

Clean your mattress on a regular basis by:

  • Sprinkling baking soda over the mattress.
  • Letting it sit for an hour.
  • Vacuuming the baking soda up.
  • Flipping the mattress and repeating on the other side.

You could also add 10 to 20 drops of an essential oil into the baking soda to give your mattress a pleasing scent.
